Yo! My name is OCTAVIO the Dweeb. I’m a 21 year old from Monterrey, Mexico. I’ve been making music since I was 16 and it’s been a crazy journey so far. I started making music for other kids like me just trying to fit in somewhere. I’ll always be making music for other dweebs like me. I like to inspire people and make people feel good.

Dweebs are any person who feels lost at times, out of place, like they don’t fit in. We’re all kind of dweebs in our own way, just trying to be happy and be our dweeby selves. My fans started calling themselves dweebs which makes me so happy, it shows how universal that word can be. Anyone can be a dweeb no matter where you’re from or how you look.

喜欢音乐的契机是什么？哪些人启发了你想要创作音乐？

What first got you into music? Who inspired you to make music?

8岁时我看了第一场演唱会。演出的是AC/DC。记得当时Angus Young 在台上把吉他弹得飞快，排山倒海的观众响应着他。就是那个瞬间我爱上了音乐，爱上了它那种打动人心的力量。但我从没想过自己有天会创作音乐。听到John Mayer 的音乐之后我才开始弹吉他，所以那时候弹的更像是活跃派对气氛的把戏，哈哈。在变声以前，我经常跟着beats说唱，然后发到Soundcloud上。然后有一天，我17岁的时候，我意识到自己好像也可以唱歌……所以我也开始跟着beats唱歌了。我在肯塔基州的路易斯维尔长大，Jack Harlow就来自这个地方。我记得以前他会像一个默默无闻的艺人那样发布音乐作品，我会自己发布作品很大程度上受了他的启发。我想如果他能做到，为什么我不能呢？

I went to my first concert when I was 8 years old. It was an AC/DC concert. I remember seeing Angus Young shredding on stage with a giant crowd just praising him. That’s when I fell in love with music and the way it can move people. I never thought I’d end up making music. I started playing guitar after discovering John Mayer so I could play it more as a party trick haha. I used to rap over beats and post on Soundcloud before my voice changed. Then one day, when I was 17, I realized I could kinda sing... so I started singing on beats too. I grew up in Louisville, Kentucky which is where Jack Harlow is from. I remember seeing him put out music as a small artist back in the day and he really inspired me to post my own music. I was like if he can do it, why can’t I?

We heared that you are originally from Monterrey, Mexico - now residing in Los Angeles，How does that impact your life？

我来自墨西哥这一点对我周围的一切都产生了巨大的影响。在我快6岁的时候全家一起搬到了美国，我不得不学习英语。我只在家里说西班牙语，所以在成长的过程中我总感觉有两个不同的Octavio。一个是在家里，一个是在学校。如今，在洛杉矶，我喜欢做一个自己过往一切所知所遇的综合体。我试着把所有这些感觉都融入到我的音乐中。

Being from Mexico has had a huge impact on everything about me. Growing up I had to learn English when my family moved to the states when I was almost 6. I only speak spanish at home so I grew up constantly feeling like I was living the life of two different Octavios. The one at home and the one at school. Nowadays, here in Los Angeles, I love being a blend of everything I’ve ever known. I try to incorporate all these feelings into my music.

How would you describe the music that you typically create?

我的音乐是我成长过程中听过的所有音乐的混合体。在某种程度上是摇滚与另类、独立音乐的融合。我喜欢AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Post Malone, Rex Orange County, Fun, Queen, Jack Harlow, Keane, xxxtentacion, lil peep, daniel caesar。这么多不同的音乐人启发了我。我想创作自己独特的声音，但我主要从这些音乐人那里汲取灵感。

My music is a concoction of all the music I grew up on. A blend of rock with alternative, indie in a way. I love AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Post Malone, Rex Orange County, Fun, Queen, Jack Harlow, Keane, xxxtentacion, lil peep, daniel caesar. So many different artists inspire me. I try to make my own sound but I draw inspiration from these artists mostly.

Could you explain to me in detail how your songwriting is done?

一首歌有很多不同的创作方式。可能就在我洗澡的时候会想到一个旋律，一个月后再写下来，然后我就知道这首歌成了。某些时候生活中出现了一些戏剧性的场面，我就想赶紧回家，把我感受到的写成歌。我尝试用心创作，忠于我的真实经历。写歌是我最喜欢的艺术形式。那时我可以真正成为我自己，说一些只有我会说的东西。

There’s many different ways a song can come about. I could think of a melody in the shower and write to it a month later and next thing I know it’s a song. Other times some real life drama goes down that makes me want to hurry home and write a song about how I feel. I try to only write from the heart and stay authentic to my experiences. Songwriting is my favorite form of art. That’s when I can really be myself and say something in a way only I would say it.

When is the first time you felt like this might be actually works, I can have a career in music business

17岁的时候，一个制片人在YouTube上找到了我。他把我叫到纳什维尔，让我在录音室里和他一起雕琢我写的一首歌。我记得听到自己的人声音轨时，我对自己成为一个音乐人这件事很没有安全感。这一切对我来说太新鲜了。那天结束时当他再次播放这首歌，就在那个瞬间，我感觉“卧槽”。真不敢相信那是我，哈哈。今天依然觉得难以置信。大家真的很喜欢这些歌，想听到更多这样的作品。就是那个时候，我知道我会永远为喜欢我音乐的人创作下去。

When I was 17, a producer found me on YouTube. He had me come out to Nashville and work on a song I wrote with him in a studio. I remember tracking my vocals and feeling so insecure about myself as an artist. It was all so new to me. When he played the song back at the end of the day is when I had that “oh sh*t” moment. I couldn’t believe that was me haha. I still can’t. People really loved the songs and just wanted more. That’s when I knew I would never stop providing that for everyone who likes my music.

What is the best advice you’ve been given?

别把所有事情都太当真。太当真对谁都不好。你完全可以努力工作并享受其中、做自己然后把事情做成。这一切都取决于你的心态和态度。

Don’t take everything so seriously. Being serious never really helped anyone. You can get things done and work hard and have fun and be yourself. It’s all about your mindset and attitude.

What’s next for you?

我目前正在制作我的第一张混音带/EP，希望今年能发出来。还有为专辑大量地拍摄视频、创作新歌。我也希望在情况允许的条件下尽快演出，为dweeb们贡献一场绝赞的现场。

I’m working on finishing my first Mixtape/EP currently and hoping to get that out this year. I’m also working on tons of videos and songs for an album. I’m looking to perform soon too, when the world allows it, and begin to build a great live show for my dweebs.
