Hello, thank you very much for receiving our interview. Through the two years of cooperation and the SAVETHEFROGSwebsite, we have learned that you have done a lot of work to save frogs, especially Dr. Kerry Kriger, who deserves people’s admiration. We want to know, what prompted the Ph.D. to initiate the SAVETHEFROGS project?
When I finished my Ph.D. research in 2007, I realized that very few people outside of universities were aware of the amphibian extinction crisis. There was very little being done with respect to educating the public, the corporations and the politicians about amphibians and how to save them. As I consider environmental education to be the foundation all of successful environmental conservation efforts, I founded SAVE THE FROGS! in 2008 as the world's first public charity dedicated exclusively to protecting amphibians populations. To date, frog enthusiasts in at least 127 countries have participated in our programs.

What is the living environment of frogs in the world now? Since the establishment of SAVETHEFROGS, has their living environment and living conditions improved?
SAVE THE FROGS!
Frogs can be found on all the continents except Antarctica. They live in rainforests, deserts, grasslands, mountains and many other ecosystems. They tend to be found in or near swamps, rivers, ponds and other wetlands as their eggs require moisture to survive. SAVE THE FROGS! has helped re-forest degraded habitat in Ghana ?West Africa) and has built numerous wetlands in the USA. We have also helped to protect threatened habitats in Canada and New Zealand. Amphibians still face many threats, but through our efforts, there are far more people and organizations actively working to protect them and the habitats they depend on.

Since the establishment of SAVETHEFROGS, what important and memorable things the team has done? Would you like to share?
A:SAVE THE FROGS!

We know that SAVETHEFROGS has become a global project, and many volunteers and people have actively participated in it. Based on the current data, which country does the best? What is the experience?
A:SAVE THE FROGS! 2020年的SAVE THE FROGS!
SAVE THE FROGS! activity levels in different countries vary year to year, often depending on the availability of volunteers. We have had significant long-term efforts in the USA, Ghana, India and Bangladesh, where many universities have ongoing activities, especially each year in April, for Save The Frogs Day. The 2020 SAVE THE FROGS! Art Contest received entries from 51 countries, with China and Russia having the most participants.

We want to know who is the main target of the SAVETHEFROGS project? How to convey the concept of SAVETHEFROGS to students? They are a huge crowd.
We have always had a large focus on teachers and students. Teachers have the ability to spread the amphibian education to large numbers of students. Students will be choosing their careers soon, and have the ability to dedicate their working years to environmental protection efforts. We also like to get environmental organizations involved, as they are already interested in environmental issues but may not yet have any activities directed to amphibian conservation. When necessary, we work with politicians on issues that they may be able to assist with via their legislative capabilities.

We have noticed the SAVETHEFROGS art competition project. Can you talk about the original intention of establishing the art competition project? How has the situation been in recent years since the establishment of the competition?
A:SAVE THE FROGS!
The SAVE THE FROGS! Art Contest was conceived in 2009 by a high school student (Leah Klehn) who sent us some frog art and suggested a contest as a good way to spread the word about our frog saving campaigns. The contest was an immediately success. Between 2009 and 2020 we received 16,822 frog art entries from artists in 91 countries. Much of the art we receive clearly shows that the artists spent time learning about amphibians on our website and thus we know that the contest helps to educate the artists. Furthermore, we use the art in promotional materials and on merchandise to further spread amphibian awareness and raise funds for our environmental efforts. The contest is an easy way for teachers who may not have much amphibian knowledge to get their students interested in and educated about amphibians.

It is a very good idea to convey the concept of SAVETHEFROGS to young students through art. Are the judges of the SAVETHEFROGS art competition all professional art persons? What qualities do they value in the work?
Creating art is a very healthy exercise for students, and incorporating environmental themes is a great way to build an environmental ethic in the next generation. Our judges are not always professional artists, but usually have significant experience creating art. In my case, I am not a great frog artist, but having seen over 16,000 pieces of art, I have developed a very good eye for quality. What I look for is originality, interesting use of color and shape, attention to the details of any text or writing, and the environmental concepts conveyed. Most importantly, I am aware of my initial reaction to the art and how it makes me feel.

In China's extraordinary literary works and poems, the frog is a lovely image. What do you think is the living condition of frogs in China?
I have never surveyed frogs in China myself, but know that frogs in China face three major threats: land use change, consumption for food, and invasive species. China's growing human population requires land to live, farm and work on, and this causes damage to the local ecosystems through deforestation, wetland drainage and pollution. Many frog and salamander species in China are hunted for food. And China has a large number of frog farms where American Bullfrogs (Lithobates catesbeianus) are farmed in large numbers. This non-native species often escapes the farms and establishes wild populations. The American Bullfrogs have very large mouths and they will eat native frogs and other wildlife, as well as spread fungal diseases such as chytridiomycosis (one of the leading causes of frog extinctions worldwide).

We 【International Student Art]】are an organization that promotes international art for students (3-18 years old) professionally. We have a large audience of artstudents and partners in China. Does SAVETHEFROGS!have any plans to promote it in China?
A:我⼀直惊喜于SAVE THE FROGS!
I have always been surprised and pleased that the SAVE THE FROGS! Art Contest has been popular in China, as we have never promoted it there in any way. I am hoping this interview will get shared widely among art schools and environmental organizations in China and that many new artists will learn about the contest and take part. China consistently delivers some of the best frog art, and due to its long history and cultural traditions it tends to be distinct from art received from other parts of the world. We welcome widespread participation from artists in China.

SAVE THE FROGS! is happy to have the participation and assistance of International Student Art and we look forward to receiving your students' art in upcoming contests!
The SAVE THE FROGS! Art Contest runs annually, and we accept art year-round. Art must be received by November 1st each year to be judged with that year's entries. Any art received after November 1st gets judged with the following year's entries. We wish all the artists the best of luck!
